I get a security error .. but I checked the source and the applet has not server setting so not sure if th applet knows which irc server to connect to.

maybe make that information available so we can use normal irc programs as well ?

The error I get is :

"can''t to continue due to security parameters" which google finds 2 links for, neither which explains anything.

unfortunately I'm at my old work, which I'll be leaving in a week, and still working on windows. Installed is java 6 standard edition.

java console has this :

Netscape security model is no longer supported.
Please migrate to the Java 2 security model instead.

From what I can read it won't work due to security stuff changed in java 6
