I'd be very interested in setting up Nevewinter on my system using booman's guide.

Before proceeding I'd like to know if the available guide works with "Elemental Evil" content.

I'm running Debian Sid, Linux kernel 3.16-1, nvidia driver 346.59-1.

Current version of Play on Linux is 4.2.6-1 in official Debian sid repository.

Don't use the guide. There is already an automated installer that works fine without having to do everything manually. You don't need Arc either.

https://www.playonlinux.com/en/app-2505-Neverwinter_Online.html

The guide is not a part of POL. That is a 3rd party guide. Always check our supported software section first before trying to do a manual install. It is a million times easier. :)

If there is something extra to install for the "Elemental Evil" stuff, you can use the "Run a .exe in this virtual drive" option in the Misc. Tab in the Configuration Window. If it is installed in-game, then it should just be available.

For sure. :) Also, like the previous poster said, just like on Windows, it is just a part of the client itself, so the Elemental Evil stuff will just get downloaded automatically. I installed it yesterday on my system and it worked great. :D Actually, I am going to procrastinate with work even more today playing STO. haha.

Okay, I reinstalled using only PlayonLinux this afternoon.

I opened POL > install > searched for Neverwinter > selected Neverwinter Online, and then let it run. I worked perfectly.

I tried to use Ronin's link, but firefox didn't know what to do with it (and neither did I). I assumed that it would be the same script as the one inside the POL software.

To play the elemental evil content your character must be at least level 60. Then go talk to seargent Knocks and do the "starting seed" quest, that gets you to the content.

It is the same one. ;) lol. That is just the link to the repository entry for the script. A "script" is anything that you can install via the "Install" menu in PlayOnLinux. Just like you did. Sorry; the nomenclature can get a bit obscure.

Install has worked succesfully for me so far, the client is currently upgrading happily in a wine desktop at the time of typing this message.

I need to say that I had a number of failed attempts prior to this.

While inspecting the logs I found an error message which stated the following.

"Wine cannot find the freetype font library".

This confused me somewhat as the latest available (Debian Sid) package is installed on my system.

The answer as it turned out was that I needed to reinstall the package using the following command.

"apt-get install libfreetype16:i386"

The key part here is the ':i386' as this installs the 32 bit variant of the package. I'm running a 64 bit system.

I found the answer in the support forums of my distribution of choice "Siduction".

Nevertheless others attempting an install on a 64 bit system may find this helpful also.

I don't know however what the correct command or method would be on rpm based distros.

Also note that "libfreetype16" is the package name on Debian (proper) and it may be named differently for Debian derived distributions such as Ubuntu and others.

Cheers.

Yeah; for almost every program that you install/run through POL, they will be 32-bit, and when calling to the system, will be looking for 32-bit versions of libraries such as that. Any time POL complains about missing a lib on your *nix system, it will almost always be looking for the i386/i686/32-bit version. :)

Here's an update.

After the initial uprade of the Neverwinter Client to include the latest content "Elemental Evil", the client crashed.

I'm not sure if this was the Neverwinter Client itself, playonlinux, wine or a combination.

Second time round the Client updated successfully, launched then crashed before the monitor calibration screen.

Third times a charm I guess, as the Client successfully updated, launched, monitor callibrated and then onto Character selection. Yay.

I've been able to play, changed characters and perform various tasks in game. I haven't ventured forth into combat at this stage though.

Gameplay is good for the most part though some stuttering is present at times.

The client crashes more often than I would like, but recovers successfully.

At present though there is no sound whatsoever.

Opening up the Wine Configuration tool and selecting the audio tab reveals the following.

Under "Driver Diagnostics", selected driver reads (none).

Perhaps once again I need to install the 32bit variant of a required library?

Thoughts, input and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Full debug logs? We are guessing without it. ALSA or pulseaudio? Oddly, after installing on quite a few different systems with different OS's and have only had superficial crashes.

Oh, and for performance issues, try to use the newest "-staging" version from Manage Wine Versions, to enable CSMT. I have seen some really good results.

Right, sorry.

Sound system is ALSA.

I've done some reading into the problem and found the following entry on the WineHQ wiki regarding sound.

http://wiki.winehq.org/Sound

The relevent section reads as follows,

ALSA

Wine does its best to probe your system for information about the available devices, but ALSA's device enumeration does not work very well. Wine will detect your hardware devices, but it may not be able to find software devices you have configured. To tell Wine about these devices, please set the following registry keys:

HKCU\Software\Wine\Drivers\winealsa.drv\ALSAOutputDevices  #Multi-string value containing output interface names
HKCU\Software\Wine\Drivers\winealsa.drv\ALSAInputDevices  #Multi-string value containing input interface names

You can specify them as defaults in the Audio tab in winecfg.

In an attempt to fix the problem I followed the above advice and created the entries using regedit under POL/Wine.

Regarding the requested logs. I've checked these looking for errors and other useful information. I try to solve problems before asking.

Prior to adding the registry keys mentioned above there were no error entries in the debug logs relating to sound.

After adding the entries the following appears in the logs.

err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"winealsa.drv": libasound.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
err:mmdevapi:DllGetClassObject Driver initialization failed

err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {bcde0395-e52f-467c-8e3d-c4579291692e} could be created for context 0x1

I hope this is helpful.

Also as an aside, is it possible to install screenshots in posts?

Cliking on the "insert image" button above does not seem to allow for uploading an image from a local source.

Cheers.

You shouldn't need to configure anything. Make sure that you have the 32-bit ALSA libs installed. It really should just pop up in winecfg. I have never had to configure anything, save for when I need wineasio and Jack.

EDIT:

"

err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"winealsa.drv": libasound.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
"

Download and install the 32-bit version of libasound2. That should take care of the sound issue. :) Sorry; I was on my mobile earlier when responding and did not see the actual lib that was missing.

For sure. :) There is documentation on that here:

http://wiki.winehq.org/Recommended_Packages

Now, you may not need all of them for your particular cases (I never go through this list to get stuff working, but I end up installing a lot of dev packages, too), but this is pretty much every package that Wine can/will use to compile (which, in turn, are things that may be used if needed), so it is a good starting point. Keep in mind that the names may vary between distros.

G'day Ronin,

It's up and running now, sound included.

Would you believe it but the libwine-alsa package was not installed, go figure.

A quick apt-get install, (did a full dist-upgrade) earlier, and thanks to the magic of multi-arch support all 32 bit and 64 bit packages / dependencies were pulled down.

I'm running a later version of Wine as you mentioned would provide performance improvements.

It's all good, so far.

A quick grocery shop with the missus and grandchild, then I'll venture out into the world and try out some combat.

Thank you for your perseverence, advice and support mate.

Update: just killed my first dragon with a 'mouse' on Linux.... cool. Runs very nicely.

Hahaha. Excellent! Glad it is working out. Again, feel free to try the newest "-staging" WineBuild from Manage Wine Versions and see if enabling CSMT helps (I know that youu said tha tyou are running a newer version, but did you enable CSMT? Of course, that is completely optional. If it is running fine, I would just leave it. haha.). I will tell ya, I have seen ~15%-40% increases on both of my computers that I game on (one with dual Nvidia cards, proprietary drivers, Linux 4 kernel, and the other just a Dell with Mint and HD 4000 Intel GPU).

Enjoy!

As an aside, I absolutely love waking up to see things like this. haha. Knowing that you are out there defending us peasants against the ravages of those dragons really made my day. :)

Installed through POL today with the "Neverwinter Online" option. Stuck at the splash loading screen for 20+ minutes. Is this common or is there a work around?

There is a note at the end of the installer that says that it can take up to 20 minutes or more to load initially. You should read every notice that comes up during the installs. lol wink

Oh, and I just did a quick search, and there is no workaround that I can find yet. If you find one, please let us know, but I believe that is just something that has to be tolerated. It only does it the first time though, so it isn't too annoying.

Yup, I've always had to wait a long time at the first login.  After that it only take a few minutes and I'm in-game playing
