Steam will start up and run, but when I try to log in, it crashes.  I use Ubuntu 13.10 with the lxde desktop environment.  I use the newest version of PlayOnLinux, 4.2.2.  It says "Error in main.  Steam crashed."

Your problem is that you are using an old version of Wine. The script for Steam runs 1.5.25, but there has been an update to Steam that crashes all versions of wine with the exception of 1.6.2 (stable Wine) and 1.7.8 and up. Click on Configure, then in the General tab, click the down arrow and select one of the versions I have listed above. If you don't have them, go back to your main POL window, click on Tools>Manage Wine versions, then install the Wine versions that I have listed above. Then you can change your settings. It should work then!!

This looks to be the same problem I'm having, however, it seems to be happening with every version of Wine I install.
I've removed 1.5.x, everything I have is >1.7.8
I've also used http://www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/threads/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-guide.331/
It worked in the past, but now I have this crash problem. Very strange.
