Hi Guys,

As an avid EVE Online player I severely enjoy the possibility to play EVE using playonlinux. The recent introduction of the CSMT patch in WINE 1.7.1-CSMT (32bit) is a brilliant addition: much smoother gameplay, fps increases by 50% to 100%, which is awesome in big battles.

However, when I jump from one system to the next, the EVE client freezes on the warp screen (the one between gates, with the cloudy warp tunnel). The cursor is still active and the mouse pointer shows the correct icon when I move it in and out of the screen.

After a while (about 30s) playonlinux asks me if I want to terminate the application, which sadly is the only option at this point. This problem doesn't show in WINE 1.7.1 or 1.7.4.

So, I'd like to know how I can help fix this problem?

My system specs:
Ubuntu Gnome 13.10 x64
AMD PhenomII 955, 6gb ram, 128gb ssd.
ATI Radeon 7770 with ATI restricted drivers, 13.11 beta.

Does Wine 1.7.1 & 1.7.4 have other problems?
Just wondering why you don't use those if they work...

The main reason for the 1.7.1-CMST version is the performance gain. In other Wine versions the game runs but with frame rates between 0 and 30 fps, which can be annoying. The game runs best (feature wise, not performance wise) on a Wine 1.5.x GuildWars build, but I have to check the exact version to be sure.

Ah, ok that makes sense.
I've had the same problem with certain games.

Sounds like the Wine 1.7.1-CSMT may have either broken something or conflicted with some programming in the game/drivers/libraries.
Unfortunately this is something that you and I can not fix.

We are at the mercy of the Wine/PlayOnLinux developers.
But you can request Wine 1.6 or even Wine 1.7.5 to be patched with CSMT and see if it fixes your performance and freezing problem.

At this point trial-n-error are your only hope.

CSMT in known to break things and not be compatible with all programs, check patch release notes, this is an experimental patch

Ah, thanks for clearing that up Petch.
Is there anything currently in-the-works to improve this patch?

Looking at Wine 1.7.x changelogs, I suppose this patch was a proof of concept, and it's being transferred piece by piece, in a cleaner way, in the official Wine versions...

Sounds like a waiting game...
So now we wait

Hmm, the plot thickens. I installed the new AMD Catalyst 13.11 Beta V9.4 Driver for Linux yesterday and tried EVE Online again with the Wine 1.7.1-CSMT version.

Lo and behold, the game doesn't crash when jumping between systems. Seems like something in the previous driver didn't play nice with the CSMT patch?

Very nice!
So you can play it now?
Drivers and Wine versions can do amazing things or break everything.

Thank you for being persistent and patient!!!
It was worth it!

Don't forget to mark this thread as solved
