Dead Space will not run

DanglingPointer	Hi All, I'm new to POL and would like to play Dead Space on it. I bought the game 3 years ago but believe it or not, never got around to playing it!!! I installed it last night using the pre-configured list in POL. Everything installed correctly but unfortunately no joy. I followed the steps on this website... http://www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/threads/dead-space-guide.155/ but crashes when running. If anyone can help I would be really grateful! Thanks in advance! VARIABLES: ----------- POL: 4.2.1 WINE: that which is installed by the pre-config in POL -Computer- Processor : 8x Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz Memory : 16418MB Operating System : Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS -Display- GPU : Radeon Hd 5870 Resolution : 1920x1080 pixels OpenGL Renderer : ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series FGLRX Version : 2:12.104-0ubuntu0.0.1 X11 Vendor : The X.Org Foundation -Multimedia- Audio Adapter : HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH Audio Adapter : HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic -OS Variables- Ubuntu and root filesystem is installed on a USB stick. 10TB RAID is used for multimedia files and large application-installation paths (eg. Linux Steam games). Unfortunately POL-DeadSpace during installation comes up with a pop-up advising to leave install target path on the default locations which ends up on the USB stick, which is fine as there is sufficient space there. Ideally I would like to install and run the game in the RAID5 path. -Dead Space Error on Run- A pop-up with... "The program Dead Space.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. etc. etc" A log file is produced and I get another pop-up with a sad-smilyface stating... "Error in main Dead Space crashed." Did you install the 32-bit libraries in Ubuntu? DanglingPointer	will 32-bit libraries run on Ubuntu 64bit? If so just "i386-linux-gnu"? Or are there others? Are these libraries from Synaptic or something for POL which I need to find somewhere from the POL website?

booman	DJ has more experience with multi-architecture, but yes, 32-bit will run and is necessary for Wine and games. PlayOnLinux needs them too because almost all games are 32-bit and won't run without them. DanglingPointer	I installed the above package then attempted to run the game but it crashed again. I am uninstalling the game now and will reinstall it again. Perhaps it needs to be installed with the ia32-libs-multiarch package already in the system beforehand. Will let you know how it goes... Edited by DanglingPointer

booman	Yes, that is exactly right. If you do a manual installation PlayOnLinux will ask you if you want a 32-bit or 64-bit virtual drive. Always choose 32-bit. But if you are installing from a script I'm not sure if it asks you that? DanglingPointer	It didn't ask from a script. After the reinstall, it failed again. I googled around and read somewhere to always use the newest version of wine with POL (can't remember where now as I was falling asleep while waiting for the game to install!). So I downloaded Wine 1.7.1. I tried to run it again, and this time with the newer wine it made it to the first screen then it froze. I couldn't recover and return to desktop so I had to reboot the machine. Well at least I made it further. I was thinking perhaps one of the issues is that I'm trying to run the whole game off a USB stick since the default path is what was instructed. I'm thinking of reconfiguring wine 1.7.1 to point to my RAID path so it can run off real disks. Also I may try installing by not using the script so I can force that question of whether to use 32bit or 64 bit. Edited by DanglingPointer

booman	Oh, I had not idea you were running Dead Space from a USB drive. I can definitely see problems with that. So you created a virtual drive on the USB and installed the game there? Yes, please do a re-installation.... Start with Wine PlayOnLinux Yes you have to install Wine first, then PlayOnLinux... but you won't be using it after that. Then use the PlayOnLInux Wine manager to install versions of wine for testing. DanglingPointer	Hi Booman, mate I know it is an old thread but just wanted to let you know I finally got it working! :) I bought and SSD and migrated my system to the new disk. Dead Space installed flawlessly with the newest wine. Thanks for your help mate. Now I'm trying to get Far Cry 2 working with the newest POL but so far no good. I'll book that on a separate thread.
