It's possible... with Arch Linux, at least as far as I know, there isn't a notification when there are updates available. I do update frequently, however. I'll have to see if there are updates I need to do and check if I'm using current drivers.

I don't play all that often, so I haven't gotten all that far. I have passed the sub getting blown up, and you end up in that strange garden. I haven't played since then. I don't know how far into the game that is, but it's been a crazy trip! I have to admit, it's a very very creative game... I have to put it up there close (but not quite as high as) Half-Life 2, which is my all-time favorite FPS.

Yeah, Bioshock is definitely a classic and has a lot of cinematic moments.
It was the first time that I saw realistic moving water.
They did a great job with water all over the place!

Too bad I can't get Bioshock 2 running in Linux

Yeah, it's no fun when you can't get a game running. So far I've been pretty lucky... most everything I play installs in Linux. Far Cry has been giving me some trouble lately... for some reason I can't get it to work. I've gotten it working before- I made up a script to load it and had it working correctly on my laptop... but now, for some reason, it just won't work. Perhaps I should try it on my desktop... hmmm.

You are definitely right... the water in Bioshock is amazing!!!

I made a Far Cry guide here: Far Cry Guide
I got it to run with everything on High and 1680x1050 resolution.

Until Skyrim, Bioshock has the best water interaction.

Thanks, Booman. I did have a script to automate the install, and it worked every time. Now, for some reason, it doesn't. Every time I try to install it, it crashes. I pretty much did the same thing that you did in your walkthrough, but all I did was copy the discs and run the installer. After that, I could never get it to play. Keep in mind that I did the testing of the script on Ubuntu 12.04LTS, and I now use Arch Linux... Arch does things a little differently, so it could be something to do with Arch. I will have to try it again and see if I can get the game working, but use your guide to insert the additional elements into my script. I wouldn't mind playing Far Cry again! I just bought Skyrim: Legendary Edition on sale through Steam not too long ago... it's installed here on my laptop and desktop. I've played it just a little on my laptop, but it was a little jerky. I would like to try it on my desktop to see if the nVidia drivers make any difference.

Hey Booman... I recently upgraded to the newest stable Catalyst driver, and guess what... Bioshock is working on my laptop!!! I had a little heartache figuring out how to keep it from swapping resolutions (I had to set the res. in the game to the same res. on my laptop) and I didn't get full 360 mouse to start (I tried mouse warp override, and that crashed the game- I ended up using dinput set to built-in and it worked correctly). I'm really happy that I can play Bioshock here on the couch instead of sitting at my desk!!! I'll have to try a bunch of my other games to see if the new driver is truly improved!

Cool, glad you got it working.
Please mark this thread as solved (if you haven't already)

Its amazing how AMD drivers have been a complete pain to Linux gamers. I've seen it over and over and over
Something doesn't work, and the errors always point to d3d and drivers.

I'm glad updating the drivers actually helped this time.
So are you playing Bioshock just on your laptop, or is it hooked up to a widescreen Television?

I'll have to find out how to mark the thread as solved, but I will be happy to do that.

That's the very reason why I built a desktop and refused to buy an ATI video card. I've had fewer problems with the nVidia card... but as long as ATI continues to try to make things better, I'm not going to beat them over the head. Most of my games work for me in Linux., both on my laptop and on my desktop. Source games were a pain for me for a while, but they fixed that too. I'm pretty sure ATI will get off their hineys if the Steam Box (or Machine, whichever you want to call it) takes off. I'm sure they don't want nVidia cornering that market!!!
