I just successfully installed MS Office 2010 on Mint 15 after several hours of headaches by installing the latest version of Playonlinux and modifying the config.xml to install the product key and activate for me.

The mods are:

<PIDKEY Value="Your Key Here" \\>
<Setting Id="AUTO_ACTIVATE" Value="1" \\>

The config file is in the install directory in the "ProPlusWW" directory.

Anyway, Now that that is done... How do I install the (*$& Office updates such as SP1?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

We probably need to write a script to get those installed. One thing that you can do is to run the SP1 installer in the virtual drive, like so:

PlayOnLinx -> Configure -> Select Office virtual drive -> Miscellaneous -> Run a .exe in this virtual drive

and select the install for the service pack. Ill say though, that Microsoft stuff like this is very picky in Wine, so it may require some extra leg-work to get it working.

We can actually figure out what it needs, if you are down to work with us. Try running playonlinux from the terminal, and then try to install the service pack as I said above, and if it fails, take the terminal output and post it here. That will give us a clue as to what is happening.

Again, Im betting against it not just working, but really, in theory, if Office installed on there, then the SP installer should be able to patch up the installation.

Also, do they make an Office 2010 SP1 installer? Like, with SP1 and all of that already installed? That might be something to try as well.

Try the above method, and let us know if it works.

I'll be happy to help. I have since tried another way to get Office installed and that's using VirtualBox. It's less then optimal. Not that it doesn't work well but my problem is HD space. I only have an 80G HD and can't afford to upgrade it yet. Laptop... Running straight Win7 uses 60+G with everything installed. Thus my problem. I have a 500G External but only a USB connection to hook it up. Slow.  Anyway it'll take a bit to get going and try your suggestion but as soon as I do I'll let you know and also see if I can find an installer for SP1 to update the installation files themselves. Thanks for the help!

Last change... I changed to LMDB.  The Debian based Mint.  I also reinvestigated the slipstreaming problem and fixed it.  Basically extract the SP files into the Updates directory in the install directory and install.  I installed Playonlinux latest version and installed Office and all went well.  SP1 installed and it activated.

What remains now is the remainder of the updates. Because 90+% of the updates are security related I'm wondering how important they are given my particular form of installation.  I still need to try to install a security update as mentioned above.
