Hi there,

I want to give some feedback for the test installer of Guild Wars 2.
First of all two things:
1.: I'm very new to Linux, so don't be angry about "dumb" explanations from me, please.
2.: English is not my native speech, so I have to say sorry for that ;-)

these are my Specs:

Wine version: 1.5.12-GuildWars2
Distribution: Ubuntu
Distribution version: 12.10 64bit
Graphics card: AMD, Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6950, 2GB Version
Graphics card driver: using default X Server ATI/AMD display driver wrapper, dunno exact expression for it
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 840 Processor × 4
RAM:8 GB DDRIII RAM on 1333 Mhz

Comments:
Biggest problems in my opinion:
Low Fps, crashing launcher every ~10.000 files downloaded

Installation:
So the installation of Guild Wars 2 works after all. Every 10.000 files I had to restart launcher 'cause it crashed.

Graphic drivers:
If I try to use the propritary ati drivers to run GW2 the opengl libs for 32bit and 64bit can not be found. I don't know if this is normal behavior?

FPS:
Ingame my FPS is between 2 to 6 fps on highest graphic settings up to 8 to 11 FPS on lowest graphic settings.
My network connection is at ~11 Mbit/s downspeed, so this shouldn't be the problem.

Menu windows & Settings:
Trading post seems not to work.
Friend window, options, inventory, hero menu and chat are working great.
Sound works very well, start screen works very good, as well.

Skillbar:
Switching between weapon sets does not work for me by pressing the default "^" key on keyboard, but does on klicking the icon.

I hope this is the right forum to tell you about what is working and what isn't?

So, these are my first impressions of the latest test installer for GW2.
If the FPS would be better GW2 should work really good after all on Ubuntu 12.10.

Best regards,
stroud92.

Did you use the script, or did you try to install it manually?

Hi,

client crashes during download/patches is normal, it's a well known bug with wine, no fix available for now.

Except that, I didn't experience any of the bugs you list. the game is working very well for me and I have firends using it without issues too.

1- It's VERY important that you use the provided PoL installer for this game, do not manually install it.

2- You must install ATI/AMD FGLRX driver, the default X.org radeon driver is not a good idea for non-native gaming.

3- If you still have those bugs after that, post use the "Debug" fonction in PoL and post the log on the bug tracker, we will make our best to help you.

Ok, would this step be done by selecting the fglrx drivers in the packet source manager in ubuntu like this ?
If yes: this is the setting where POL client tells me this:

"PlayOnLinux couldn't find 32bits OpenGL library."

I'll wait with doing that after the answer for number 2 ;-)

You must install both x64 and x86 part of the driver for PoL to work... I don't know how it can be done for FGLRX since I don't have ATI/AMD card but I think there is many Ubuntu tuto for this, like Yoda said : "use google luke" :)

So, after all I installed the fglrx driver correctly. I fot it from the official AMD driver (stable version 13.1) website and in terminal "fglrxinfo" gives the right output.
The alert boxes i mentioned are away.

If I start Guild Wars 2 now, with right fglrx driver the launcher hangs up.
I googled a bit and found an tester at wine hq who told users to use the parameter "-dx9single" for gw2 and installing "ia32-libs" should be installed. so I tried. GW2 starts now correctly, but the fps is still at 3-11 FPS.

I tried to reduce the resolution, too - no changes.
Even a reinstallation didn't help.
I also changed the wine version from "1.5.12-GuildWars2" to "1.5.28-GuildWars2" to see if it will work better than before.

I made screenshots of my settings:

and

So, any ideas what I could've made wrong?
Or do you think it is a bug?

I hope I don't get on your nerves with my 1000 questions.

Hi,

the "-dx9single" parameter is already on by default with PoL GW2 installer and ia32-libs was indeed mandatory for wine to work under x64 system ^^

For the low FPS issue it's quite simple, ATI/AMD driver is very poor and kinda crappy under GNU/Linux, "thx" to ATI/AMD for the result while Nvidia took it very seriously in the very begining.

Honnestly I don't think you will have better performances right now...I new/better driver is needed (it is better now thx to android and Valve, but still far worst than it's windows counterpart).

Non-native GNU/Linux gaming with ATI/AMD GPU is a poor and disappointing experience for now, there is nothing we can do about it.

You can play some native games with good performances, like "Steam for Linux" or "indie" games but I suggest you to avoid non-native ones, sorry.

If you can, switch to Nvidia GPU, you will have a far better way of non-native gaming with it

Hi,

And as I was reminded by "T|ASK" on IRC, there's also a long standing Wine problem that affects the performance of this game: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11674

Ok, thanks. That's interesting: I read an article about Linus Torvalds, who has shown his middle finger to nvidia. Because of this I thought AMD/ATI graphic cards would be the better choice for linux. :D

So I'll have to search for an affordable Nvidia Card.

Thanks for the high quality technical support, I do not know this kind of good support from my homeland. There you get offended even by technical support members if you tell them that you are new to the topic.

Linus was talking about their lack of support for the open source optimus driver and nothing else, from watching the whole conference video.

Yeah. Linus also told him what he thought of them with a middle finger and a couple of choice words. Lol. It was actually pretty funny. Id never seen him get mad like that before, except in the kernel mailing list. haha

As far I could report. I changed the Wine Version to 1.7.1 and Guild Wars 2 is still Working and in my thinking a bit more stable.

*Edit*
...Or not. the Black Lion Trading Company do not work in 1.7.1 In only one Tab appear something an that looks like a Website with out a CSS file.

While allready necromancing a dead thead: GW2 gets quite a fps boost on systems with low end cpu's when using this http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2013-September/101106.html patch for wine
While testing this https://launchpad.net/~foresto/+archive/winepatched/ version of wine (1.7.1-0ubuntu2+guildwarsii1) on my notebook using an old Arrandale cpu and a 5650m. The result is far better then with the wine version that the pol instalation of gw2 is using
