I see in the FAQ that I ought to install:
1) PlayOnLinux won't start

a) Install the following packages through you package manager:
-Python
-wxPython
-gettext
-cabextract
-ImageMagick
-Wine

Does that mean all of them? I don't understand what that means.

I am using Ubuntu 12 and I want to install iTunes 7

I have been trying to install "playon Linux" so that I can use iTunes. I follow the instructions as they are given on the playon Linux webpage. Looks like I have to install something with "tar" in the title and then the playon linux for ubuntu and then at the bottom of the instruction page it tells me that it would be better to use iTunes 7.

Having followed all the instructions, I find my computer downloads a "read only" version of the software with "tar" in the title.

The part of the instruction that tells me I will simply be able to see a pop up window that lets me install the iTunes -- well -- that never appears.

Oh -- excuse me -- something is suddenly appearing now, after an hour of trying -- that tells me I need the 64 bit installer not the 32 bit installer that is appearing. Where did that come from? How do I get the 64 bit installer? There was not choice for that that I could see. I clicked cancel because I need the 64 bit version -- but I don't know where it came from or how to get back to it.

Obviously I am not familiar with code and software etc -- I cannot remember details of lines of code -- it is too much for someone like me who is totally unfamilair with code.
Is there a way to simply follow instructions and have the thing succeed?

Remember, I am not a tech person who understands and remembers strings of code. I was expecting to follow instructions, download something and have it work as is says it will.

Thanks for your help and patience.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

If you have a look there, you will see that 11.10 is no longer supported, I assume they don't maintain the repos for 11.10 anymore. You really should update to a supported version of your distro.
