There has to be more output than that.

can you run playonlinux from the terminal and then try to do the same thing. Then copy and paste the output in the terminal here. There is a lot more output than what was posted.

Also, post your system specs, drivers, video card, linux flavour, etc etc., as per the rules of the forums:

I can't get it to run in the terminal. When I type wine Sims3Launcher.exe it gives me a popup that says it fails and to try reinstalling it.Here is a more complete list of the debug log. I also forgot to mention that this is a steam version of the Sims 3.

Thats because this isnt WINE (well, not exactly). Its PlayOnLinux. You are not even running POL, bypassing it to run Wine directly. This is not the function of PlayOnLinux.

You are running the wrong command, and not even running playonlinux.

If you open a terminal and simply type:

playonlinux

Quote

then POL will start.

For more information on how PlayOnLinux works, please refer to the documentation. This will greatly increase your understanding of how wine and playonlinux play together.

Ok, I can't copy/paste with the terminal I'm using but it basically says the exact same thing that the debug in my above post says.

Um, which terminal are you using? I have never seen a terminal emulator that doesnt allow copy/paste functions (it sounds like you have other issues besides POL).

There is NO WAY it says the exact same thing when you run the command:

playonlinux

Quote

Its impossible, simply because PlayOnLinux has a completely different output when the command is run, and the PlayOnLinux window should pop up. If you run that command from your terminal, you WILL get different output, and the PlayOnLinux window, if you even have PlayOnLinux installed. You must be typing the wrong command, or adding more to it.

All of it. :)

From what it looks like, you need to remove PlayOnLinux and reinstall it. It looks like a bad install. Version 4.2.1 is out. You can get it from:

http://www.playonmac.com/en/download.html

Backup your ~/.PlayOnLinux folder, delete it, then reinstall PlayOnLinux.

NOTE: After using PlayOnLinux to install a program, you NEED run the program through PlayOnLinux. Running "wine" to invoke the systems wine version will not net the results you are looking for through POL.

Again, make sure that you read the documentation above, so that you fully understand how the software works in conjunction with wine, but is not an actual PART of the system wine that you installed through your package manager. :)

I'm reinstalling playonlinux. To use my wineprefixes do I just move them to my new playonlinux directory?

Ok, so you got it running. Thats it. Have you tried reinstalling your software (not playonlinux. Sims 3)?

Again, I believe that you do not understand how this software works, and I again suggest that you read that post from above. Just starting playonlinux doesnt do anything. You need to install your program WITHIN POL. Not just run it.

Did you read the documentation, and do you understand how PlayOnLinux differs from just using Wine? You cannot use regular vanilla wine prefixes in PlayOnLinux. It keeps them separated, in its own playonlinux folder.

Im not trying to be offensive or anything. Im just stating that I dont think that you have read nor understand how this software works. :)

I messed up my install of PoL.So I went and reinstalled it again but this time when I type playonlinux it gives me this bash: playonlinux: command not found. How do I run the python scripts from the terminal?
Ronin DUSETTE Wednesday 3 April 2013 at 2:22
Ronin DUSETTE

If you reinstalled playonlinux, and then you type playonlinux in your terminal, and it says command not found, then you didnt install it.

You dont run the python scripts from the terminal (python is also a high-level language, not a scripting syntax, which do have some differences.)

How did you reinstall it? Step by step, dont leave ANYTHING out. You are not doing something or not telling everything that is happening, and its making it incredibly hard to troubleshoot your issue.

I honestly am going to say that you have a lot of reading and studying to do about linux in general, as you need to at least understand the basics of this operating system. If you cant install PlayOnLinux correctly, which is just like installing an .exe installer in Windows, then you are going to have problems understanding how POL/Wine work.

Again, I dont mean to sound crass or rude. I just think you need to learn more about your computer and Linux in general, as this is the basics of the basics when it comes to installing the POL software and starting it. Im not sure what else to tell you. Especially considering you are not answering the questions Im asking, like:

Also, post your system specs, drivers, video card, linux flavour, etc etc., as per the rules of the forums

You do realize, that without any of this info, like requested, we have no clue what you are running, and that it makes it increasingly difficult to help, right? :)

yea, sorry about that I'm still very new to Linux. But how do you run the python scripts? I can't get them to run by clicking on them. Also here are my system specs

OS: ArchBang x86_64
Kernel: 3.8.4-1-ARCH
Graphics card nvidia geforce GTX 550 ti
Drivers 4.3.0 NVIDIA 312.26

No problem, but unfortunately, we cannot teach you all of the ins-and-outs of Linux. haha

Again, you dont run the python "scripts". They need to be executable, and you should be able to run them by clicking on them. This is how it is on every system that its CORRECTLY installed on.

Do you have all of the python libraries installed? You didnt compile this from source, did you?

You need to completely remove and delete anything playonlinux related, and follow the instructions for install on the Download page in its entirety. This thread is going to be locked. Its gone way off topic, and you still didnt notice that I said that you dont run "python scripts". Its a programming language, not a scripting language, as it may look like. On Linux, typing:

playonlinux

in a terminal will run POL, or as you put it "run the python scripts".

So again, please read some Arch tutorials on installing software, and install POL exactly as the instructions for your distribution suggest.

Let us know what happens after you read a bit and try again. Understanding is the key, as we can say technical this and that all day, but it gets you nowhere if you dont understand Linux. Its not your fault. haha. Linux is odd to get used to when you come from a world of Windows/DOS. Give it time, and do some reading.

Hi,

err:wincodecs:PngDecoder_CreateInstance Failed reading PNG because unable to find libpng12.so.0

Not sure it will solve all your issues with The Sims 3, but your system is lacking this library, the 32bit version of libpng12. Since it seems you're running some distribution based on Arch, the package should be called lib32-png12 I think.

Again, like I said before, this is not the FULL output. You are leaving stuff out. Also, are you even running it with playonlinux or are you trying to run it with Wine again?

EDIT: Actually, I can tell that you did not run PlayOnLinux, you did not upgrade, and you didnt even use PlayOnLinux to start your program.... Pretty much did nothing mentioned in this endless thread. Its taking a lot of time to try to help (I have spent all day yesterday trying to help), but you are not listening to instructions, not even running playonlinux like we are telling you to, not upgrading, and not posting the correct information, and what you do post is incomplete.

I will have to lock this thread again, if you do not provide FULL and correct information, as well as follow instructions given before posting.

I have been very clear as to what you should be doing, but you dont seem to be taking it in, nor do you seem to be reading anything that is sent or posted.

Did you upgrade to POL 4.2.1 like petch said?

Ok, so I am going to dedicate some more time to helping you, as I know how it is being a new Linux user.

So, first off. What I am going to do is take you through the installation process step by step. Read and follow each step that I give, and then when you do it, whether or not it worked, copy and paste ALL OF THE OUTPUT from your terminal to your response.

Step 1: Installing PlayOnLinux

Since you are running Arch (Specifically ArchBang, if I remember), I will post up the EXACT install instructions. After you run these, please respond with ALL of the output that your terminal gives, good or bad, unedited:

Arch Linux

Adding the archlinuxfr repository:

As root (or with sudo), add to /etc/pacman.conf the following lines (for i686 architectures):

[archlinuxfr]
Server = http://repo.archlinux.fr/i686

Or the following lines (for x86_64 architectures):

[archlinuxfr]
Server = http://repo.archlinux.fr/x86_64

Installing PlayOnLinux

As root (or with sudo), type the following command:

pacman -Sy playonlinux

Actually, scratch that. No wonder you cannot get it installed. That Repo has no playonlinux in it at all. Not for ANY architecture. I just went and searched it right now.

Ill get a bug report opened (well there is actually already one that you did, so I will upgrade that to a higher priority).

Dont worry. Im going to make sure that you get up and running. :)
