The Witcher/Witcher 2 Steam Problem

I'm having trouble launching The Witcher and The Witcher 2. I downloaded both through the Steam version on POL, but whenever I try to launch either, the screen that would be the game copies the desktop and sits on top of the windows. To get rid of it, I have to move POL to a different workspace to kill the processes. 

I'm running the most recent version of POL. I would install from a disk (have cds for both games) but POL doesn't want to find my disk drive :P


Can anybody help me with this? Thanks. 


I'm pretty new to Linux and POL by the way.

Is there a workaround?

EDIT: After a little break from trying, I got The Witcher working. I reinstalled it with the latest PoL and changed the wine version to 1.5.27 from the default 1.4. Everything works except for the health and toxicity bar bug, but I don't know if there is a fix for that. At least it's playable.

I can't get The Witcher 2 to work however. It tries to launch, but fails. The log gives me this when I try to launch it from Steam:

I tried installing msvc100 and then mfc42 (there is no mfc100u on the list) and that didn't do anything. Any clue what could be wrong?
