I found a copy of Half-Life 1 online that is not through Steam, i.e. it is simply the old files from the CD.  Installation went fine.  Prompted for CD-key, gave it, installation finished.

Application opens with PlayOnMac, and XQuartz prompts me to allow resolution change since the program requests it.  I allow it.  Screen changes resolution and goes black: makes like its about to play.  Nothing happens.  Computer drive starts running very fast, and still nothing happens.  I exit the program by changing resolutions back, and in the top corner of the screen is a miniature, messed up (in terms of colours) window of the half-life menu.  So I click on start new game --- medium difficulty etc.. And then it prompts another resolution change, as it is about to run the game.  Same thing happens.  Nothing runs but the computer it seems, with a black screen...  When I exit that resolution, there is nothing running on my desktop but XQuartz and PlayOnMac, no Half-Life...

I am running Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5 on a mid-2009 Macbook Pro
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB

There is an existing legal version of Half-Life 1 without Steam ;-) I reopen the topic

Yes there is! Not to mention I own the CDs of all the original Half-Life's/Expansions... Sometimes its easier to hybridize operations a bit...
