I've tried something new - using Vulkan to sort-of navigate arround errors I was getting. Here are my steps:

  1. Create a fresh 64bit prefix.
  2. Install dotnet461 and vcrun2017 via winetricks.
  3. Install DXVK https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/
  4. Download mscoree.dll and replace all 15KB placeholders in C:/windows.
  5. Download MSVCR120_CLR0400.dll and place it in C:/windows/Microsoft.NET/Framework64/v4.0.30319.
  6. Install vulkansdk via winetricks as shown here: https://github.com/roderickc/wine-vulkan
  7. Add DXVK=devinfo, fps to run parametrs and --force-vulkan to the game's run parameters in Steam.

It did not work but now there is no dll errors so thats something...
The error log I'm reciving right now:

It seems the mscoree file I've found (https://www.dlldump.com/dllfiles/M/mscoree.dll) did not fix the issue. But before the mscoree-related message shows up in the log, this line appears a few times:

err:ole:apartment_getclassobject DllGetClassObject returned error 0x80004005 for dll L"C:\\windows\\system32\\mmdevapi.dll"

UPDATE:Found a diffirent (https://www.dll-files.com/mscoree.dll.html) mscoree file and now all errors related to this file are now gone. The error about mmdevapi.dll still remains. This is most likey the culpirt.

Tried the compability branch (32bit dx9). Made a new 32bit prefix, installed dotnet40, vcrun2017 then steam and the game. Got the unknown graphics card error when set to win7. When set to winxp it crashes with no clue why in hte log file.

I try to fix this script everytime a new wine release appears. It seems that instalation for any vcrun from 2013 and later and dotnet461 fails and this might be the main reason behind this game not working. It could also be the game's engine in that case we are SOL untill Wine devs come up with something.

My script tripped on:

POL_Call POL_Install_d3dx11_42
POL_Call POL_Install_d3dx11_43

I manually performed the steps up to here, then substituted "d3dx11" from the list instead of those two.

Currently Steam is downloading SE - though I'd prefer it to find my local copy. :(

Updated the script to install dx11 properly. Also added an message about switching to DX9. You have to run the game once to generate the file (the game will deffinetly crash but should work after that) the change this:

      <Key xsi:type="xsd:string">GraphicsRenderer</Key>
      <Value xsi:type="xsd:string">DirectX 11</Value>

to this:

      <Key xsi:type="xsd:string">GraphicsRenderer</Key>
      <Value xsi:type="xsd:string">DirectX 9</Value>

The game will automaticly detect your screen resolution and graphics card. Since Wine 1.9.x virtual desktop/mouse override trick is unnecessary and you can do a 360 turn without it.

The only problem so far is audio. Music and sounds work in main menu after launching the game but after loading a save everything goes quiet (even after exiting to main menu). the official game site (http://www.spaceengineersgame.com/audio-issues.html) tells this is an issue with SoundBlaster drivers. I was looking for a way to fix it but I was unable to find any solution to this problem.

Thats odd I was able to run the 32 version you sure you haven't modified the shortcut? Also did you completed the instalation script fully?

May I ask why you are still installing dx11 when it doesn't work with wine? Wouldn't it be better to just have it set to install dx9 --> _42 _43?

Yeah, any update, as its been changed since april some time where they discontinued support of the DX9 and win32 branch?

Why does the script install the same exact window font files, and why doesn't POL cache the files instead of re-downloading them every time?

Message

I updated the script but the game might crash with "Exception occured: SharpDX.SharpDXException: HRESULT: [0x8876086C], Module: [Unknown], ApiCode: [Unknown/Unknown], Message: Unknown" regardless if you use wine 1.8 or 1.7.55-stagging. Any help with this would be great.

Your error message is similar to the one mentioned on their issues page but without the specified module actually filled. Their page indicates that the error stems from a multi-monitor setup. Not exactly sure if the two errors are actually the same but it's worth mentioning.

Addendum to my former comment. D3dx11 doesn't work with the game regardless. I'm using a 64bit Ubuntu 15.04 system with a
3.19.0-50-generic kernel and my card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti. I also tried using Dx11 with the latest wine version of 1.9.4. Anyway, d3dx9 works great BUT one has to get the SpaceEngineers.cfg from a windows source because the game doesn't generate the file properly. At least the file continuously fails to generate properly for me. Rather, the cfg is generated initially and set to use Dx11 and when Dx11 fails to load it wipes the cfg file. Thus, one can't edit it to set it to Dx9. Even if one has the install set to d3dx9_42 & _43 the game still tries to use Dx11and botches the cfg file. So once the file is generated and cleared one needs to copy a Space Engineers Window's cfg file and edit the line section that has GraphicsRenderer. All one does is remove 11 and put 9. I also had to edit the height and width settings to match my virtual desktop set by PoL because it too caused the game to fail to load. This has all been my experience but I'm certain this occurs for others too.

My code review, even if the source has not been posted in the right place:
- Your script lacks POL_Debug_Init right after POL_SetupWindow_Init, to enable embedded debugger support;
- plain POL_Function_FontsSmoothRGB statement is deprecated, use POL_Call POL_Function_FontsSmoothRGB instead
POL_SetupWindow_message "$(eval_gettext 'Now the script will install the game. After the installation is complete do not play it. Close steam so the script can set the necessary dlls to "Native".')"
I think that's redundant with the general PlayOnLinux installation instructions that already state that programs should not be started from their installers. Since PoL 4.2.9 the user will even be reminded to do so, until (s)he checks "don't remind me" checkbox, so I think that's enough (otherwise it can't be helped).
- POL_Wine start /unix "$SETUP_EXE"
"start /unix" is usually unnecessary, and has a bad side effect, so better avoid it whenever possible.
If you remove it POL_Wine will probably be synchronous so you'll have to use POL_Wine_WaitBefore instead of POL_Wine_WaitExit (see discussion in http://wiki.playonlinux.com/index.php/Scripting_-_Chapter_11:_List_of_Functions#POL_Wine_.284.0.2B.29)
- POL_SetupWindow_VMS $GAME_VMS
You never defined GAME_VMS; This statement will work fine, asking the user for available onboard video ram, caching the answer and modifying the registry, but won't output a warning if the system requirements are not met.
I hope I didn't miss anything important...
